Avigal Eguia Berrones or also known as Tita, nickname given by her grand-daughters, is a Mexican woman to-the-bone.
Tita is a proud daughter of Dr. Arroyo, a small town located five (5) hours from the city of Monterrey in the north of Mexico.
She spent her younger years living in Jaumave, Tamaulipas and, her beloved, Mexico City where she completed her professional studies and obtained a degree in Economics.
Tita (and family) moved quite a bit, between Celaya, Queretaro, and even Guatemala, where she introduced her (tamal) style to the locals.
Finally, she was destined to go back to her roots and the family relocated to Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.
Tita, year after year, tells the same story. Her passion for tamales started from an odd challenge. One day, when she was living in Mexico City, she visited her brother (Jesus) in Dr. Arroyo; to her surprise, Don Chuy was helping his wife to make tamales. Tita was amazed after seeing her brother adding the masa with one stroke to the corn husk! So, she said - "If he can, the hell I can!!!" - or something like that. And yes! as soon as she got back she went on a mission and, 35 years later, she hasn't stopped.
A few years ago, she wrote down her recipe as her legacy to pass on to her daughters. But, like every old-school cook, she still likes to make tamales following no other instructions but her heart.
We love you Tita!
This is a small appreciation of your creativity and for creating a moment that brings the family together around a bowl full of masa...dilicius!
